Indigenous to Africa, African Black Soap is made from the skins of various plants, leaves and tree barks. Plantain skins are widely used, along with, palm leaves and cocoa pods. Plus, a variety of oils and butters are used, such as, coconut oil, palm & palm kernel oils & shea butter, however “traditional” African Black Soap can actually be damaging to one’s skin as it alters the ph of the skin in a harsh way, almost like a bad chemical peel. Traditional ABS makes the skin ph more than 9.7  making it too harsh for daily use and can cause the skin to become sensitive, irritated, or dry if overused. Which is why I created my Island Black Soap aka Cocoa Burdock Soap which has a pH of 5.5, which is the same as the skin's natural pH. This means that it won't disrupt the skin's natural moisture barrier, making it a great option for those with sensitive skin. … Made with some of the same ingredients as traditional African Black Soap but with added ingredients to provide a super emollient that soothes and cleanses WITHOUT stripping or upsetting the delicate natural pH balance necessary for soft, healthy looking skin. As a result, Island Glow Cocoa Burdock Black Soap will help clean dirt and sebum at the root of the pores, remove excess oil on the skin, remove bacteria and reduce acne as well as care and restore damage caused by acne, fade dark spots and scars. From there, it helps to balance moisture, maintain the natural stable pH of the skin and bring out the natural smoothness of the skin. Island Black Soap aka Cocoa Burdock Soap is packed with minerals and vitamins that help keep the skin soft, deeply moisturized, nourished, and young.
Please note, the pH of your cleansers matters because something that is high pH, 9 and above, can be too drying and stripping for your skin. When your acid mantle and skin barrier are compromised, it can lead to bacteria, which causes acne and dehydration, which leads to wrinkles.
I’ve added burdock root to this blend as it is used to treat acne, eczema, and psoriasis based on its antioxidant properties, and ability to detoxify the blood, and improve circulation - all of which promote health. Optimal skin health. The effect of burdock root not only helps the skin look younger, but also helps to purify and detoxify the skin through its ability to promote blood circulation to the surface of the skin, improve the quality, structure of the skin and cure the skin diseases such as eczema and acne. 
Another key ingredient is Cocoa Pod ash, as it is rich in antioxidants that fight harmful free radicals and can help to prevent premature aging and also contain anti-inflammatory properties that soothe eczema, acne & other inflammatory skin conditions. Enriched with minerals and vitamins like Vitamin C, magnesium and omega 6 fatty acids, cacao promotes blood flow and increase cellular healing to develop a youthful glow and may help to tone the skin.
I’ve also added Seamoss! Besides being an excellent skin moisturizer, sea moss has incredible soothing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties. The mineral-rich sea moss also nourishes and softens the skin, while vitamin K promotes elasticity and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and dark circles.
